<text>This book tells the saga of Wolfe Ismond, a British national born into a Jewish family but raised in Shanghai. He gave up a good job in Shanghai for a farming career in Canada, but was unsuccessful. He returned to Shanghai and led a colorful career before he fled to Canada when the Sino-Japanese War broke out. He returned to China as a Protestant missionary, but his ship was diverted to Manila where he was caught by the war. Stranded, he proceeded to Baguio but was captured by the Japanese there and interned for three years.

Ms. Ogle, a Protestant missionary, got to know Wolfe in camp; she writes about his experiences in Camp John Hay, in Camp Holmes, the transfer to Bilibid in December 1944, and liberation in 1945 in three chapters of this book. She continues on with his post war missionary career: he returns to China, is captured by the Chinese Communists and got out just in time.</text>

Adamson had helped his brother set up a technical school, growing to a full-fledged college (and later university – Adamson University). The two married and proceeded to Manila in 1939.

Mrs. Adamson talks about life in Manila, and devotes six chapters to her experiences in occupied Manila. Considered neutral by the Japanese, Mrs. Adamson and her husband remained free in Manila, but encountered severe shortages and other difficulties in daily life. She continues by describing life in Manila after the war.</text>

                <text>A non-fiction family “biography” spanning a quarter of a century, from 1926-1950.

The family is that of the author, the Santos-Cuyugan family: her father was a medical doctor, assigned to Lucena, Tayabas (now Quezon) province in 1926. She narrates life in the province before the war, and how the author and her siblings had to adjust after living in Manila. Prior to the outbreak of war, the family moved back to Manila, where it was during the Japanese occupation.

The author spends almost half of the book narrating the family’s experiences during the war – living under the Japanese, listening to shortwave news, worrying about the author’s brother, who joined his college classmates to go to war, and her special friend, who was part of the USAFFE. Ceres, her younger brother and mother went to Capas to look for brother Mario and friend Corban. Both survived and were released, but Ceres’ uncle and his family in Mindanao were massacred.

Brief on the liberation and even briefer on the postwar years. The author’s friend and classmate from the University of the Philippines later became her husband (Corban L. Alabado) and wrote his own memoirs.</text>

She has three short chapters on the outbreak of the war and the Japanese occupation, and ends her memoir with the destruction and death wrought by the Battle for Manila. Her husband of three years was executed by the Japanese, together with her father; the ancestral home of the Guerreros was destroyed by an American bomb inadvertently dropped on it.

The pain of recounting the war is still evident, and it was only with much courage that she brought herself to remember those tragic days.</text>

<text>Autobiography of the wife of Benito Soliven, congressman from the Ilocos. She was the mother of ten children (the eldest, Maximo “Max” Soliven, became a noted journalist).

Mrs. Soliven’s husband volunteered for the Philippine Army and became a reserve officer; he was called to duty and served in Bataan, endured the Death March and concentration camp, only to succumb to disease months after his release. The bereaved but indefatigable Pelagia valiantly took up the task of raising their nine children (the youngest died shortly before her husband; her father also died during the war).

Almost half the book is devoted to her wartime experiences (some in Manila; the remaining months in Ilocos Sur), including letters from her husband while a prisoner of war. After the war, she opened a dress shop and managed to send her children through college.

An inspiring book on a woman who could not be defeated.</text>

<text>Personal memoir by the first Filipina to acknowledge that she was a “comfort woman” – a sexual slave of the Japanese Imperial Army.

While the nightmarish experiences of Korean women had been exposed earlier, no Filipina woman came forward to recount her ordeals until 1992, when she responded to radio appeals for Filipinas to come out in the open. Fondly known as “Lola Rosa,” Henson was raped by a Japanese officer in 1942 near Ft. McKinley, in Rizal province. Her family moved to their hometown of Angeles, Pampanga, where Henson was taken by the Japanese and forced to become a comfort woman – a forced prostitute – to be raped by numerous Japanese soldiers daily.

Rescued by the Hukbalahap guerrillas, she tried to put her horrible experiences behind her, but got caught in the midst of the fighting between the post-war Huks and the Philippine government. In this autobiography, she tells of her ordeals – and her courage to face up to them.</text>

<text>Norman Reyes was a mestizo born of a Filipino father and American mother who is better known as a radio broadcaster who read the “Bataan has Fallen” spiel on April 9, 1942.

In this autobiography, he talks about how his parents met and married, settled in San Juan, Rizal and gave birth to him. He describes his growing up in Manila with two cultures, and details his studies and his classmates, his travels and adventures.

The last three chapters deal with the arrival of war, his being commissioned as a lieutenant in the Philippine Army, and his role in the Voice of Freedom in Corregidor. He ends with the surrender and his capture. (He omits the rest of the war from his book, which is unfortunate, as he was forced to broadcast for the Japanese during the occupation). After the war, he migrated to the US.</text>
