Description

Biography (by his son) of this daring and innovative American aviator, Paul I. “Pappy” Gunn who left behind a legacy that was hard to match.

The book actually tells two parallel stories: the life of Pappy Gunn, particularly his wartime exploits, and that of his family which was left behind in Manila and interned in Santo Tomas Internment Camp. Gunn set up Philippine Airlines in 1939, and was one its main pilots. When the war began, he flew PAL’s planes as part of the “Bamboo air force” to the Visayas and Mindanao in support of the defense of the Philippines. Eventually he was evacuated to Australia, participated in Royce’s Raid just after the fall of Bataan. He flew bombers in the South Pacific and participated in the liberation of the Philippines. He was reunited with his family in 1945 in Manila. His flying career was cut short after the war when he was killed in a plane crash.
