Japanese--Philippines.

Description

Personal observations and vignettes by a respected Japanese resident of Manila. Mr. Osawa arrived in the Philippines in 1925, and published his autobiography ("A Japanese in the Philippines") in 1981.

This collection of memories and anecdotes supplements his autobiography, focusing on individuals and experiences relating to the Japanese community in the Philippines before, during and after the war. He considers the period before the war as the high point, the war period as a tragedy, and the post-war period a renaissance for the Japanese community.

Part 2 of this book deals with his wartime experiences, as interpreter for the incoming Japanese forces, and head of the Liquid Fuel Distribution Union. He cites his friends and also Japanese who damaged the reputation of Japan. He also deals with postwar imprisonment in Muntinlupa, and the fate of Japanese war criminals.
