Description
Publication of an important primary source: the basic Report of Operations of USAFFE [US Army Forces in the Far East] and USFIP [US Forces in the Philippines] in the Philippine Islands 1941-1942, by Gen. Jonathan M. Wainwright, and some of its annexes. This report, with its subordinate reports, was initially written by key USAFFE officers while in prison camp; the final report was finished after the surviving officers were liberated and returned to the US.
Wainwright was commander of the North Luzon Force when the war broke out, was assigned the I Corps in Bataan and finally became commander of the USFIP after MacArthur’s departure for Australia in March 1942. These reports serve as the official after-action reports of the USAFFE and USFIP and their subordinate units.
Volume I of this series contains the reports of the North Luzon/I Philippine Corps, commanded by Gen. Wainwright; South Luzon Force and II Philippine Corps (commanded by Gen. George M. Parker); Maj. Gen. Albert M. Jones’ report of operations of the South Luzon Force; and the report of the Luzon Force, by Maj. Gen. Edward P. King, Jr. and his staff.
Additional material include notes and comments by the editor, who was a World War II veteran himself; a partial listing of the editor’s collection of World War II and a chronology of the editor’s life.
(Vol. II published USAFFE reports relating to Corregidor and the harbor fort islands; the coast artillery and the tank group; Vol. III, reports relating to the Visayas and Mindanao forces; and Vol. IV, service organizations and the Philippine Division).
