Description
This pamphlet is part of the series “The US Army Campaigns of World War II,” written and published by the US Army Center of Military History in conjunction with the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of World War II.
A concise campaign summary for general readers (particularly Americans), the pamphlet covers the US liberation of Luzon Island, spanning 15 December 1944 (planning stages and invasion of Mindoro) to 4 July 1945 (when MacArthur declared the campaign over). Narrates the Mindoro landing, Japanese plans and dispositions on Luzon, Lingayen landings, fighting in Central Luzon, the Battle for Manila (without acknowledging US artillery role in destruction of government buildings); operations in Northern Luzon and east of Manila.
There is no word on Filipino guerrilla assistance or Filipino civilian casualties, atrocities in Manila and elsewhere. Andrade acknowledges friction between MacArthur and some of his subordinate generals. The pamphlet provides a quick introduction to the campaign, so Americans would get to know what happened in the war better, and particularly the US Army’s role in it. This being an army publication, there is also hardly mention of the participation of the US Army Air Force and Navy.
The back cover contains relevant titles for further reading. Note that there are two other pamphlets in this series which deal with the Philippines: Leyte, by Charles R. Anderson and Southern Philippines by Stephen J. Lofgren.
