Compilation of letters, vignettes, and prose and poetry by a granddaughter trying to reconstruct the life of a grandfather (William Harrington) she never knew, and the love story he and the author’s grandmother shared.
Bill Harrington was an American lawyer based in Manila, and Ruth, his wife, had been raised in Manila. Bill, a reserve US Navy officer, volunteered to join the armed forces in the defense of the Philippines; he served in Cavite, Bataan and Cebu, and became a prisoner of war (Bacolod; Davao; Cabanatuan, Bilibid). He died as a prisoner of war, probably on the Oryoku Maru. Ruth, on the other hand, was interned in Santo Tomas.
Ottiger tries to piece together their story, through letters from and about Bill, some research on the prisoners of war and hell ships, and adds her own thoughts about the Philippines and the war, written as poems and essays, as she discovered more about the lives of her grandparents.
This is an expansion of thesis originally written for an M.A. in English at the University of Hawaii.
