Description

This book is a collection of interview excerpts (and occasional quotes from published personal accounts) relating to personal experiences during World War II in the Philippines.

Almost all of the interviewees (“narrators” is the term used in the book) were historical figures, virtually all of who are now gone. Among them are Raul Manglapus, Esther Bellarmino, Marcos “Marking” Agustin, Joaquin Roces, Fr. James B. Reuter, Earl Hornbostel and others. Almost all were connected with the underground resistance movement in one way or the other, and speak of Filipino courage during the dark years of occupation.

The interview excerpts are arranged chronologically, by topic (pre-war life; start of the war; Manila Open City; Bataan; POW camp; guerrilla resistance; Japanese tortures; the Muntinglupa jail breaks, liberation). Extremely valuable for rare first-person accounts from the Filipino perspective.
