Description

Subtitle on the title page reads: “A prison camp Quan assembled by the following P.O.W.s and cooked by Capt. Paul Ashton, M.C. with fond memories. To describe a war and its consequences, so that, the curiosity of those born since can know what it is like.”

This book, unlike Dr. Ashton’s earlier Bataan Diary, tells the story of the defense of the Philippines and the prisoner of war experience through the writings of others – many not previously published. “Quan” is the American spelling of the Tagalog word “kwan” which came to mean prison stew containing anything and everything (kwan) under the sun.

This compilation is more meaty, but quite mixed: there are long quotations from the memoir of Major Willard H. Waterous, Medical Corps; army nurses; a veterinarian; sailors and other veterans, written during or shortly after the war and difficult to find. Profusely illustrated with photographs and maps.
