Description

The title says it all: a personal account of a college graduate reserve officer who was called to active service in 1941 and sent to the Philippines.

He served with the 88th Field Artillery Regiment (Philippine Scouts) in Bataan. As a prisoner of war, he spent time in Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan and the Davao Penal Colony, before he was placed on a Japanese “hell ship.” This ship was sunk by an American submarine, which enabled Playter to escape. He was aided by Filipino guerrillas in Mindanao and later evacuated to Australia by submarine.
