Title
Under the red sun : a letter from Manila / Forbes J. Monaghan
Subject
Philippines--History--Japanese occupation, 1942-1945.
Description
An American Jesuit recounts the Japanese occupation of Manila in the form of an extended letter to his parents in 1945. Fr. Monaghan was a faculty member at the Ateneo de Manila when the war started. He writes not only about his own experiences, but also those of his students and friends, many of whom were active in the guerrilla resistance movement.
Written right after the war, the experiences and vignettes in this book are fresh and clear; this was one of the first books published in the US about the Japanese occupation of the Philippines. Provides many cases of heroism of ordinary Filipinos, and shows the Japanese as he himself saw them.
