Title

The Philippine Constabulary in the battle of the Philippines, 1941 [manuscript] / Major Carlos J. Herrera

Subject

Philippine Constabulary--Philippines.
World War, 1939-1945.

Description

Military monograph depicting employment of Philippine Constabulary in Battle of Bataan, showing the necessity for advanced and thorough planning in employing a similar police force in similar operations in the future.

The author was a PC officer and one of a handful who were able to study in US military schools. He served in the PC in Manila and Bataan during the war, and gives details on the PC’s operations after the start of the war (anti-sabotage; rounding up suspected spies; interning enemy nationals) and the sudden transformation of this police unit into a provisional military unit (the 2nd Regular Division), deployed at the front lines in Bataan. Points out the difficulties of sending the unit, not specifically trained for combat, to fight as infantry.

So that the Americans would have a better understanding of the PC, Herrera devotes a few pages to the history and mission of the PC since 1901. This monograph is based largely on the author’s own experience, but is told impersonally.
