The official journal of the Japanese Military Administration
Title
The official journal of the Japanese Military Administration
Subject
Philippines--History--Japanese occupation, 1942-1945.
Description
The Official Journal of the Japanese Military Administration (JMA) published all important speeches, messages, instructions and notices of top Japanese officials and the JMA. Bilingual, with the front part in English and the back part (front to Japanese readers) the (usually original) Japanese text.
It also contained messages from chairman of the Philippine Executive Commission, Jorge B. Vargas, as well as Executive Orders of this institution (under Japanese supervision). A total of 13 volumes were issued, of which the last is included in the Hall collection. Being the last volume under the JMA, almost half the volume consists of speeches and documents relating to the forthcoming “independence” of the Philippines under Japan. Executive orders in this volume include those relating to postage stamps, control of firearms, government workers salaries, allotting money for the election of the Philippine National Assembly and others.
Actually, this volume was published on November 26, 1943, after the Philippine independence ceremonies in October. Copies of the Journal were captured by Filipino agents and sent to Australia by submarine; some volumes were reprinted in the US as intelligence material by the US War Department.
