Japanese monograph no. 12 : Philippines air operations record. Phase III (August 1944-February 1945) [manuscript]
Title
Japanese monograph no. 12 : Philippines air operations record. Phase III (August 1944-February 1945) [manuscript]
Subject
Japan--History, Military--20th century.
World War, 1939-1945--Campaigns--Philippines.
Description
“Operations of the 4th Air Army in defense of Leyte and Luzon, with some coverage of operations in defense of Mindoro. Primarily concerned with plans and unit listings. (Unedited translation, 119 pages)”.
Dated October 1946, based on materials and memory of Col Matsumae, senior staff officer of the 4th Air Army. The 4th Air Army under Gen. Tominaga provided air support for the 14th Area Army (under Gen. Tomoyuki Yamashita) but was an independent command, and not under the 14th Area Army. (Tominaga later abandoned his command, which led to demoralization; this monograph tries to rationalize his departure)
Presented in outline form with documents (plans, orders, units) placed within the sparse narrative. Maps, tables, charts. The Japanese Army Air Force in the Philippines organized suicide attacks (Kamikaze) against US ships in Mindoro and Lingayen, but these are not given attention in this monograph.
*Citations in quotation marks from:
