Description

Monograph written for the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth by an American cavalry officer, who had served with the 26th Cavalry in the Philippine defense campaign in 1941-42.

Detailed narration (supplemented by maps) of the movements and operations of the 26th Cavalry Regiment (Philippine Scouts, particularly Troops A and B) in the desperate attempts to stem the Japanese invasion forces in Northern Luzon. The 26th Cavalry, composed of professional American officers and Filipino soldiers, fought heroically against hopeless odds; by the time they got to Bataan, the unit was and its horses were exhausted. The horses, which served their riders so faithfully, were eventually slaughtered to supplement the meager rations of the Bataan defenders.
