Title

Legitimate collaboration : the administration of Santo Tomas Internment Camp and its histories, 1942-2003 [manuscript] / James Mace Ward

Subject

Santo Tomas Internment Camp (Manila, Philippines).
World War, 1939-1945--Concentration camps--Philippines.

Description

This scholarly paper re-examines the historiography of the administration of Santo Tomas Internment Camp during the Japanese occupation, cutting through accepted notions that collaboration with the Japanese camp administrators by American Executive Committee members was more an act of resistance.

By re-examining the histories and primary sources relating to the Santo Tomas Internment Camp, Ward tries to look deeper into the dynamics of camp administration aside from simply resistance and collaboration, noting that the term collaboration has wider interpretations than is usually accepted. By digging in deeper and removing the mist of selective memory, Ward presents other not-too-complimentary aspects of the camp administration which must be seen and recognized to come up with a more balanced history.

This article explores new ground which is usually overlooked.
