War novel about two American brothers in the Philippines: one an officer in the Philippine Scouts, awaiting his return to the US at the end of tour of duty, the other, younger, a fresh pilot in the US Army Air Corps who arrives on the last transport to reach the Philippines before the war.
The novel follows the experiences of these two in the defense of the Philippines: the Philippine Scout officer following orders and fighting in Bataan, only to surrender, go on the death march and suffer three years as a prisoner of war. The younger brother escapes and becomes a guerrilla officer. Both are reunited at the end of the war.
The author, after whom the Philippine Scout officer is based on, was an officer in the 57th Infantry Regiment (Philippine Scouts) and experienced most of what he writes about, thereby giving authenticity to the novel.
