Description
Lt. Gen. Brereton was the commander of the Far East Air Force in the Philippines in 1941, a major part of the US Army Forces in the Far East (USAFFE). He arrived to command the newly created air command, which was rapidly expanding in the months before the war.
This book published Brereton’s diaries from the time he was alerted to go to the Philippines, through the end of the war in Europe. Brereton was in command of the air forces in the Philippines when the war broke out and Clark Field was bombed; he thus lost most of his aircraft on the first day of the war.
The diary entries (according to some researchers, edited for publication) tell Gen. Brereton’s side of that disaster, and the subsequent loss of more aircraft during the Japanese invasion. With the Philippine airfields exposed to Japanese bombing and US heavy bombers quickly moved to the south, Brereton was evacuated to Java and then Australia beginning Christmas 1941. After the Japanese success in Java, Brereton was moved to the China-Burma-India front, and then to the Middle East; he would not have anything to do with the Philippines from March 1942.
