Description
Frank Cary was an American missionary to Japan, born of missionaries serving in Japan since the 1880s. He and his wife were stationed in Hokkaido when the threat of war brought them to Davao, to continue the mission (his wife and children were in the US by then). He was interned in Davao, and later moved to Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila.
These letters, written to his wife, children and friends in the US, although there was no way to mail them. They chronicle Cary’s experiences, observations and anxieties. Since Frank could speak and read Japanese, he was used as an interpreter occasionally. (One of his sons, Otis, became a specialist in Japanese literature and culture).
