Memoir of a British national with Estonian roots who grew up in Shanghai. She and her family tried to escape worsening conditions in China as the Sino-Japanese war heated up; they sailed to Singapore but were diverted to Manila when the war broke out. She and her parents were interned in Santo Tomas and later Los Baños, where she was among those liberated in the daring air and ground raid of February 1945.
