Description

Autobiography of a U.S. Army nurse who was assigned to the Philippines in May 1940.

She was initially assigned to the hospital on Corregidor and then to the Fort McKinley hospital, where she was when the war broke out. She describes conditions in the hospital during the early days of the war. While the other army nurses were sent to Bataan, the author was told to stay behind; she was ordered to tend soldier patients on board the converted hospital ship, the Mactan. She was the only US Army nurse on the ship, accompanied by several Red Cross nurses.

She narrates the tense voyage to Australia, and her career during the rest of the war and after.
