Description

The story of Howard Irish, Jr., a 24-year old American soldier who was sent to the Philippines in September 1941, as one of the reinforcements for the Philippine defenses.

Irish was assigned to one of Corregidor’s gun batteries, and later transferred to Fort Wint (in Subic Bay) where he and his fellow soldiers helped instruct Philippine Army coast artillery crews. He drove a truck in Bataan, managed to make it to Corregidor when the peninsula surrendered. He was captured by the Japanese after Corregidor surrendered. He never returned home. His mother, followed by his sister, did everything they could to find out what happened to him, and this book is the result: the saga of Howard Irish in the Philippines before and during the war, as told by his letters home, and later, by officers and friends who survived. The book also documents how his mother tried to obtain information on her son from all possible sources during the war.
