World War II experiences of Edna Hayes Gump, an American woman who arrived in the Philippines in 1935 with her husband, a miner. When the war started, she was in Baguio, but evacuated to seemingly safe Manila. Her husband joined the USAFFE, but was captured and killed by the Japanese. Alone, Edna had to fend for herself in Manila and internment in Santo Tomas. For a while she was allowed to stay at the relatively more open children’s home in Holy Ghost College, where she looked after children of the internees, but was returned to Santo Tomas. After the war she returned to the US.

Contains excerpts from her internment camp diary. Appendices include a copy of one issue of the newsletter of the Relief for Americans in the Philippine organization in the US, and a list of Santo Tomas internees.
