Personal memoir which starts with the surrender of Bataan, and details the author’s experiences in the Death March, prison camps (Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan.
The author was a U.S. Army officer, a staff member of II Philippine Corps. He wrote a gist of his experiences in the Bataan campaign in an Infantry School monograph. In this book, he focuses on his experiences as a prisoner of war, beginning with the surrender of Bataan, the Death March, prison camps (Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan, prison ship to Taiwan and Japan).
He provides a list of American officers in the last two camps he was in. After the war he remained in the army, retiring as a colonel, and pursued a Ph.D in biology; he is able to look at his experience as a prisoner of the Japanese in a more objective manner, and returned to Japan several times after the war.
