Bub Merrill was a high school graduate who was drafted into the US Army in 1941. Assigned to the 803rd Aviation Engineers, he was shipped to the Philippines and saw action less than a month after arrival, attacked while working at upgrading Del Carmen field in Pampanga.
Most of the book deals with Merrill’s prisoner of war experiences, from the Death March to Camp O’Donnell, Bontoc, Cabanatuan, and prison ship to Korea, and on to Manchuria, where he was eventually liberated.
William Duggan, a retired college professor, first met Merrill when the Merrills moved next door. After getting to know each other, Duggan decided to write Merrill’s story.
