Memoir of an American National Guardsman called to active service with Company A of the 192nd Tank Battalion.
Dopkins arrived in the Philippines in October 1941, and describes life in the few weeks before war broke out. He narrates his Bataan experiences briefly, focusing more on his experiences as a prisoner of war. He describes what he saw in the Death March, the horrors of Camp O’Donnell and other POW camps, the hellships and forced labor.
Dopkins was one of 99 men called to the service from Janesville, Wisconsin; 64 did not return. Of those who died, two were killed in action, while the remaining 62 died while prisoners of war. Dopkins attempts to reconstruct the fates of his comrades.
