Description

Autobiography of a Filipina who lived a sheltered life before the war. Her father was a rice plantation owner who was also a journalist. Her family owned the Commonwealth Advocate, a periodical which sought extension of the Commonwealth government’s life; she often wrote articles which were critical of the Japanese. When the war broke out, the Japanese raided the magazine offices and destroyed it. The Japanese seized her car, her husband died of malaria and other male members of the family were arrested and executed.

The author herself was arrested by the Japanese Military Police, tortured and left for dead. She managed to survive and joined Barrion’s Guerrilla Division as an intelligence courier. At one point she dressed in Japanese uniform to secure information from the Japanese; after the war, she was tried as a collaborator. After the war she migrated to the US.
