Description
Betty Halsema Foley was the sister of journalist (and later US Foreign Service officer) James J. Halsema; her father, E.J. Halsema, was former mayor of Baguio. She documents her growing up in Baguio, studies in the US, teaching at Baguio’s Brent School until she got married in 1939. She details her romance and wedding, staying on in Baguio. She and her husband (and brother) were interned in Camp Holmes, in Baguio when the Japanese took over the city. In late 1944 she, with the rest of the internees, was moved to Bilibid Prison, where she was liberated in 1945.
Her memoir ends with the liberation, but even after she returned to the US, she maintained close ties with the Philippines. This memoir was published posthumously, with annotations by her brother.
