Description
Biography of an American Catholic priest and missionary, belonging to the Society of the Divine Word (SVD). Bunzel arrived in Manila in October 1933 and was a member of the first missionary class held in the just-completed SVD compound in New Manila. When the war broke out, he was in Cebu, teaching at the University of San Carlos.
He describes his attempt to evade the Japanese by travelling to Mindanao, after his college was closed. With the surrender of the USAFFE and facing difficulties living as a refugee, he eventually surrendered to the Japanese. He describes life in the internment camp at Davao (Happy Life Blues), Santo Tomas and eventual liberation. Bunzel also narrates his life after the war, mostly in the Philippines and also a stint at the Vatican.
