Missionaries--Philippines--Biography.
Description
The author was an American missionary in San Juan, Rizal, before the war. Written when he was in his eighties, Brooks recounts his life in the Philippines. He describes conditions before the war, with the gathering of war clouds; the start of the war and the arrival of the Japanese. Along with other Americans, he was interned at Santo Tomas, but was allowed to live outside the camp and continue preaching as long as he submitted weekly reports to the Japanese.
He details life in occupied Manila, and reinternment in 1944, where he was moved to Los Baños. He narrates his near starvation, and the dramatic rescue of the camp in February 1945.
