<text>This book is a collection of interview excerpts (and occasional quotes from published personal accounts) relating to personal experiences during World War II in the Philippines.

Almost all of the interviewees (“narrators” is the term used in the book) were historical figures, virtually all of who are now gone. Among them are Raul Manglapus, Esther Bellarmino, Marcos “Marking” Agustin, Joaquin Roces, Fr. James B. Reuter, Earl Hornbostel and others. Almost all were connected with the underground resistance movement in one way or the other, and speak of Filipino courage during the dark years of occupation.

The interview excerpts are arranged chronologically, by topic (pre-war life; start of the war; Manila Open City; Bataan; POW camp; guerrilla resistance; Japanese tortures; the Muntinglupa jail breaks, liberation). Extremely valuable for rare first-person accounts from the Filipino perspective.</text>

<text>A personal account from a different perspective: the author (assisted by his son) writes about his experiences as a reserve officer called to active duty and sent to the Philippines just prior to the outbreak of war. He was assigned to Bohol and Cebu, and saw the war from that perspective. Ordered to surrender after the fall of Corregidor, he was jailed in the Cebu City jail, and later transferred to Davao.

He narrates his ordeals under the Japanese, in particular the notorious hell ship, the Oryoku Maru. He survived the ship’s sinking, transfer to two other hell ships, and forced labor in Fukuoka, Japan. Miner was interviewed by prosecutors at the war crimes trial of the Japanese responsible for the Oryoku Maru tragedy; his testimony, as well as excerpts of his POW diary, are printed in the book.

This book was printed in a revised edition (with some additions) by Giraffe Books in the Philippines, under the title "In the Shadow of the Rising Sun: Diary of an American POW in WWII."</text>

<text>A novel based on real events and persons in Luzon during the Japanese occupation. The key characters are American: a businessman with long experience in the Philippines; a teacher, a young woman, a military officer. (The businessman’s mistress is Filipino, as are his servants.)

The book covers life in Manila at the outbreak of the war and under Japanese occupation; Santo Tomas Internment Camp; the fighting on Bataan, the Death March and prison camps; the guerrillas. The events and characters are changed to fit the novel, but in general the mood and the details are accurate (the author points out some of the liberties he took in his acknowledgments).

The author did considerable research but also based this novel on his own experiences as the stepson of US High Commissioner Francis B. Sayre in the Philippines; he went back to the US just prior to the start of the war (His stepfather and brother remained behind, however, and were caught up by the war).</text>

<text>Prisoner of war diary of a Scandinavian-American college graduate who was drafted into the US Army, made a corpsman and sent to the Philippines just before the war broke out. His first days in Fort McKinley were, he considered paradise – hence the title of this book – but this paradise was quickly lost when the war started.
As a medic, Norquist was sent o Corregidor briefly, and then sent to Bataan, where he worked in one of the field hospitals. He gives a brief narration of events from his departure from the US until the surrender.

The diary proper begins on April 23, when Norquist and the hospital staff remained in Bataan after most of the defenders were forced on the Death March. He writes of occasional shelling from Corregidor, civilians on Bataan, and the transfer to Bilibid, then on to Cabanatuan. He was later transferred to Japan on a hell ship, and spent the rest of the war in Japan. He writes not only of his day-to-day concerns and experiences but also those of his fellow prisoners, including brutalities endured, kindnesses received, activities to keep the prisoners mentally fit such as religious services, classes, music and theater. He also documents rumors and undying hopes.</text>
