<text>This tells the story of a West Point graduate (1931) who was assigned to the 26th Cavalry (Philippine Scouts) in 1939, fought in the Philippine defense campaign, became a prisoner of war, and died on an unmarked Japanese prison ship.

Based on diaries and letters loaned to him by Fleeger’s son, Bradley reconstructs Fleeger’s pre-war life, the start of the war (Major Fleeger was S-1, or personnel officer of the 16th Cavalry), the desperate fighting of the regiment to stem the Japanese advance, and withdrawal to Bataan. He also recounts the operations of the regiment’s Company C, which was cut off but continued to fight and became the nucleus of one of the first guerrilla organizations in northern Luzon. Bradley continues on with Fleeger’s experiences as a prisoner of the Japanese – the Death March, Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan, and eventual death on the prison ship Arisan Maru, which was torpedoed by a US submarine. In addition to telling Fleeger’s story, Bradley also follows the experiences of other 26th Cavalry officers and men and the other Japanese hell ships.

The book’s title comes from a cryptic word which appeared continually in Fleeger’s diary: Reutel, which meant Remind Me to Tell You Later. Unfortunately, Fleeger would never be able to do this, although Bradley tries hard to fill in the blanks.

The author is a West Point graduate who was born and raised in the Philippines, and was interned with his parents in Santo Tomas Internment Camp.</text>

<text>This book is actually the personal memoir of Edmond Babler, which Daniels edited and annotated.

Babler joined the US Marine Corps during the years of the Great Depression in the US, and was sent to China to join the 4th Marine Regiment. The 4th Marine Regiment was evacuated from Shanghai to the Philippines just before the outbreak of the war, and saw action in defense of Corregidor.

The bulk of Daniels’ memoir deals with his life as a prisoner of war under the Japanese – 1220 days of hell, from the surrender of Corregidor to liberation in southern Japan. Frank talks about the tortures he received, but also about how he survived. He details his travails in Palawan, Nichols, Nielson, Zablan and other airfields in the Philippines; hell ship voyage to Japan and forced labor in coal mines.

The editor, Daniels, was inspired to publish Babler’s memoirs after he heard him speak of his war experiences. The book was published some ten years after Babler died.</text>

This regiment was sent to the Philippines on the eve of war, arriving in Cavite; Haney saw the bombing of the Navy base, and then was moved to Corregidor; later, he was assigned to the garrison on Caballo Island, where he was when the surrender orders came in May 1942. He describes his becoming a prisoner, transfer to Manila and the subsequent “gloat march,” and life in Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan, hell ships to Japan and forced labor in Osaka.

Most of the book deals with Merrill’s prisoner of war experiences, from the Death March to Camp O’Donnell, Bontoc, Cabanatuan, and prison ship to Korea, and on to Manchuria, where he was eventually liberated.

William Duggan, a retired college professor, first met Merrill when the Merrills moved next door. After getting to know each other, Duggan decided to write Merrill’s story.</text>

<text>Middleton was drafted in 1941 and sent to the Philippines as a member of the 803rd Engineer Battalion. He was at Del Carmen airfield when the war broke out, and was moved to Bataan to build airfields for planes that never came. He was among those who had to surrender in April 1942, went on the Death March and endured the horrors of Camp O’Donnell. He was sent with a detachment of Japanese and other POWs to the mountains of northern Luzon, before being sent to Korea on board a prison ship and on to Mukden, Manchuria. There he worked for the Japanese under threat of death. After being released at the end of the war, his troubles continued when he and other prisoners were locked up in a psychiatric ward in the US, where several went crazy or were injured. Only after some time were they treated decently, after the army tried to cover up what had happened. His memoirs bring out the best and the worst in man that he had personally seen.</text>

This book is his memoir, partly based on a diary he kept, and partly written with his co-author. He details especially the horrors of the death march and prison camp life, beginning with Camp O’Donnell. He was assigned to a work detail in Bataan, and then was incarcerated in Cabanatuan. Sent to Japan on a prison ship, he spent over one and a half years working in Japanese mines and other war industries.

Raymond kept a diary while in captivity, and tried to write his memoirs based on it several times (he was a newspaper editor after the war), but was unable to finish it until he met Mike Pride, a professional journalist, who helped him see this book through.</text>

<text>Prisoner of war diary of a Scandinavian-American college graduate who was drafted into the US Army, made a corpsman and sent to the Philippines just before the war broke out. His first days in Fort McKinley were, he considered paradise – hence the title of this book – but this paradise was quickly lost when the war started.
As a medic, Norquist was sent o Corregidor briefly, and then sent to Bataan, where he worked in one of the field hospitals. He gives a brief narration of events from his departure from the US until the surrender.

The diary proper begins on April 23, when Norquist and the hospital staff remained in Bataan after most of the defenders were forced on the Death March. He writes of occasional shelling from Corregidor, civilians on Bataan, and the transfer to Bilibid, then on to Cabanatuan. He was later transferred to Japan on a hell ship, and spent the rest of the war in Japan. He writes not only of his day-to-day concerns and experiences but also those of his fellow prisoners, including brutalities endured, kindnesses received, activities to keep the prisoners mentally fit such as religious services, classes, music and theater. He also documents rumors and undying hopes.</text>

<text>A different account of the war in the Philippines and subsequent imprisonment by the Japanese, in two ways: first, Worthington was a veterinarian and thus saw the Bataan campaign from that unusual perspective. He was involved in caring for the remaining horses and mules in Bataan, and when food ran short, sending them to the abattoir. He also tried to procure carabaos and other animals to supplement the food rations on Bataan. Second, he did not write about his experiences in conventional diary form. Since the Japanese did not allow any criticism, he concealed his opinions of them in verse, written in school notebooks. He wrote some 1400 verses in all, and reading through them one gets to glimpse his experience in Bataan, his attempt to escape by banca, capture at sea and prison camp (Nasugbu, Tagaytay, Bilibid, Camp O’Donnell,). As a senior officer, he was taken out of the Philippines early, and was imprisoned in Taiwan, later being moved to Japan and Mukden, Manchuria.

The editor/compiler is his daughter, who wanted to keep her father’s memory alive. She was an active member of the Ex-POW organization, writing articles and compiling Japanese prison camps on a map (which is inserted in the book). She transcribed, confirmed and annotated her father’s writings and wrote his biographical sketch. In addition to her father’s diary, she added his official report to the US Army Veterinary Corps, and provides maps showing where he was in the Philippines and Japan. </text>

<text>Then-Col. Lewis Charles Beebe was MacArthur’s chief supply officer in 1941; he was promoted to Brigadier General in 1942 and made chief of staff to General Wainwright, who took over when MacArthur departed from Corregidor for Australia.

He kept a detailed diary from the start of the war until September 1944. In this diary he recorded not only his experiences during the battles for Bataan and Corregidor, but also information he was privy to. This is thus an important contribution to the study of the defense of the Philippines, 1941-1942, coming as it does form a ranking officer of the USAFFE; he sheds light on the decision to order the troops on Bataan to go on half rations at the start of the siege. After the surrender of Corregidor, Beebe details his suffering as a prisoner of war, although less brutal than the experiences of enlisted men; he spent time in Camp O’Donnell, Taiwan, Japan and finally Mukden, Manchuria. He unsparingly describes the selfish behavior of some of his fellow prisoners, as well as the lighter side of imprisonment.

Annotations, a brief biography and time line were added by John M. Beebe, Gen. Beebe’s son (who followed his father’s footsteps and served as an officer in the US Army, after which he became a reverend); Stanley L. Falk, military historian and author of the classic book on the Death March, provides a useful introduction.</text>
