Carson begins his book with the surrender on Fort Drum, and goes into great detail of his ordeal under the Japanese as a prisoner of war. The book narrates the agonizing ordeal of three years in labor camps in the Philippines, voyage to Japan on one of the hell ships, and inhuman treatment and forced labor in Fukuoka, but above it all was the author’s will to survive.

This book was written in attempt to find closure, to remove a wall he had mentally built to shield himself from the ordeal. </text>

The remaining half of the book describes Boyt’s experiences as a prisoner of war: the death march, life in prison camp, to Japan via Hell Ship Nagata Maru (misspelled as Muru), and prison camp and forced labor in Japan.

This book grew out of lectures Boyt was invited to give to the class of co-author Burch, where Burch decided Boyt’s experiences deserved a whole book. Unfortunately, Boyt passed away a year before the book was published.</text>

He was one of those who was ordered to surrender on April 9, 1942, and narrates in detail his experiences in the Death March, prison and labor camps (Camp O’Donnell, Corregidor, Clark Field, Bilibid, Cabanatuan). He was brought to Japan on a hell ship, and put to work in a mine. Like many other veterans, he sought to put his past behind him, but later decided to put his experiences on paper.

He began writing in 1973, but the horrors were so painful to remember that it took a full ten years to complete. Bilyeu relates events as he saw them; to protect the privacy of some individuals, he has changed some names.</text>

He describes the attack on Clark, the battles, life in Bataan under siege, the surrender, the Death March and prison in various camps. He was in Mindanao when the war started, and tells of his hauling supplies around that island, including Moro territory, during the Philippine defense campaign. <text>Not a diary but a personal account of the defense of the Philippines and prisoner of war experience by a medical doctor in the army.

Ashton starts with describing pre-war Manila, printing his letters to his wife before the war, and then recounting his own experiences as a doctor in the Fort McKinley hospital. He details the battle of Bataan and his role as Chief of Surgery in General Hospital #1 in the rear; and then goes on to narrate the surrender, with the more able patients made to march to Pampanga. Dr. Ashton and his staff, along with the sicker patients were taken to Bilibid Prison by truck; Ashton then describes prison life, labor detail in Tayabas and other incidents faced by the POWs.

Liberally illustrated with maps, one of which is a Bataan-era map which the author was able to save, and photographs (including many of his private photos showing the pre-war Philippines).

The book is made more valuable by Ashton’s printing several actual documents relating to the prisoners of war, assistance given by Filipinos and other materials which he was able to keep during and after the occupation years. (There are reports on Fassoth’s camp, the USS Canopus, various affidavits and other documents)</text>

He narrates pre-war life on the island fortress; the start of the war; combat on Corregidor and fighting in the last day.
