Separate portions of this report document the Japanese view through interrogations of captured Japanese officers and the role of the non-combat USAFIP NL units. Ancheta adds his own comments on the USAFIP NL operations; his assessment of the Battle of Tangadan, and the officers of roster. He also reprints Gen. Robert H. Arnold’s account of the contribution of the people of Abra to the defense and liberation of the Philippines.

Arnold was a guerrilla leader in northern Luzon; Ancheta was a reserve officer who commanded a regiment of the USAFIP NL at the end of the war. As in the original report, a fold-out chart of the USAFIP NL’s chain of command is included.</text>

<text>Personal account of a West Point graduate and professional US Army officer sent to the Philippines in 1940.

Assigned as senior US instructor to the mobilizing 11th Infantry Regiment, Volckmann describes the problems the regiment faced in training; the sudden onslaught of war and his abruptly becoming regimental commander; the Japanese invasion, withdrawal to Bataan and holding the lines for three months. When Bataan surrendered, Volckmann chose not to follow the orders and escaped, eventually making his way to northern Luzon where he was able to unify guerrilla units into the USAFIP NL (US Army Forces in Northern Luzon), one the most successful guerrilla organizations in the Philippines.

Discusses the successes and failures of fighting a guerrilla war, becoming recognized by MacArthur and fighting as more organized forces in the campaigns to free northern Luzon from the Japanese.

Published at the height of the Cold War, Volckmann also includes a chapter on the role of guerrilla resistance in wars of the future. </text>

Ancheta) and USAFIP NL General Orders No. 6, a listing of the casualties of USAFIP NL through the war (also published twice before).

The first part of the book is a chronology (“almanac” in this book) of Philippine history from 1936 and World War II (including Europe; 1944 and 1945 focusing more on activities in Northern Luzon). Unfortunately the compilers (all World War II veterans) did not write about their own experiences.

This volume was published separately from the six-volume series published by the Veterans Federation of the Philippines, hence repetition of the USAFIP NL documents.</text>
