Description An account of the resource Extensively researched account of the camp set up by the twins Bill and Martin Fassoth, in the Zambales mountains. The author, a Vietnam War veteran and son of one of the Bataan veterans saved by the Fassoths, narrates the start of the war in Clark Field, the Bataan campaign and the beginning of the Death March. He gives details of the Americans who escaped the march and were cared for by the Fassoth brothers and Bill’s Filipina wife Catalina. The Fassoths were sugar planters in Luzon, and used their own money and resources to shelter these American escapees. The Japanese raided the camp’s surroundings several times, narrowly missing the camp itself. The Japanese were finally able to force the Fassoths to give up, and the escapees were placed in prison camps, where many died. Decker painstakingly recreates the story of the camp, the guerrilla resistance movement in the camp’s environs, and the fates of the key actors. Appendices provide lists of those aided by the Fassoths, and their fates. The Fassoths themselves were awarded the Medal of Freedom by the US government after the war. The squadron was assigned to Del Carmen field in Pampanga, and was equipped with old P-35 fighters. All the fighters were damaged or destroyed in a matter of days after the war started by Japanese aircraft. By December 26, the squadron was in Bataan. Oatman describes his experiences as an infantryman in Bataan, the surrender, Death March, and his escape. In the early days of World War II, he flew missions in a P-40 fighter against the vastly superior Japanese Zero fighter. With the loss of P-40s (by being shot down, destroyed on the ground, or overuse), Grashio, like his other squadron mates, became an infantryman and fought in Bataan. He was one of those who surrendered in April 1942, suffered the ordeal of the Death March, and prison camp (Camp O’Donnell, Davao Penal Colony). He was one of ten Americans (and two Filipinos) to successfully escape from the camp, aided by guerrillas. He was evacuated to Australia by submarine and returned to the U.S., where he was banned from telling his story in public for several months. He sought to get attention and help for his fellow prisoners of war who had stayed in the Philippines. After the war, Grashio decided to continue in the air force.
