<text>Action-packed journalistic account (written during the war to inspire Americans) of the operations of the US Navy’s Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3 in the defense of the Philippines.

Journalist White was able to interview four officers of the squadron, including its commanding officer, Lt. John D. Bulkeley. The officers had managed to get out of the Philippines before the surrender. The torpedo boats (PT boats) were active in Manila Bay, attacked Japanese ships in Subic Bay and patrolled the west coast of Bataan.

Their encounters with the Japanese are vividly described, as well as the problems faced by the squadron, which lacked fuel, spare parts and modern repair facilities. The officers also recount attempts at sabotage (wax in their fuel), and the daring evacuation of General MacArthur and his staff from Corregidor to Mindanao.

The book ends with the evacuation of President Quezon from Negros to Mindanao, and the ultimate loss of the last boats. This book became a best seller in the US during the war, and was made into a hit movie.</text>

<text>Pictorial for Japanese audiences on the Japanese invasions and victories in the Philippines in 1941-1942. Watari was the code name of the 14th Army, which invaded and occupied the Philippines. As part of Japan’s propaganda efforts, experienced photographers and writers were sent to the battlefront, including the Philippines.

Being a Japanese publication for Japanese readers, the book starts with what English readers consider the back, and ends in what they consider the front. The original edition of the book was published on June 1, 1943 by the Watari Shudan Hodobu, from the press of the Manira Shimbunsha [Manila Newspaper Co.]. The copy in the Hall collection is a reprint, made sometime in the 1980s in the US, with a rough English translation included. “Gasei” is a misreading of the characters on the cover, which were written specifically for this book by General Masaharu Homma – his name is written as “Masaharu” which has been misread as “Gasei.”

Photos include the Japanese landing in Lingayen; occupation of Manila; the campaigns in Bataan and Corregidor; landings in the Visayas and Mindanao, the ruins of Corregidor and Caballo Island; conditions in occupied Manila; the victory parade after the fall of Corregidor. A number of copies of the original edition were circulated in Manila with English translations stapled to their respective captions. </text>

<text>The series of Japanese Monographs were written and compiled by former Japanese army and navy officers immediately after World War II, under specific instructions from General Douglas MacArthur, who was then Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers in occupied Japan. MacArthur ordered the writing of these studies to provide the Japanese perspective of the war, given that so many important reports and documents were lost during the war, either as a result of combat operations and bombings, or else deliberate destruction at the end of the war.

Over 180 monographs were written, covering almost all aspects of the Pacific War, from the highest levels to specific regions and battles. Twenty monographs are wholly on the Philippines (army, navy, army air, navy air). Several other monographs included sections on the Philippines (such as histories of the Southern Army, Military Administration of occupied areas, railroads, and others).

Some of these monographs turned to be important sources of information for later studies, while others were hardly more than outlines of plans and organizations of units. Some covering up or omissions took place, requiring MacArthur’s headquarters to reiterate more strongly what was required in the monographs. With the abolition of the Japanese Army and Navy, the so-called First and Second Demobilization Bureaus took over administrative responsibility, for the army and the navy, respectively. The monographs were in many cases supplemented by surviving documents or reconstructed orders as remembered by surviving officers.

Due to lack of documents or the infirmity of human memory, some gaps and inaccuracies resulted. Some of the monographs were edited and published; many others were edited quickly but not finalized, and remained in manuscript form with annotations and corrections penned in. Some of the translations themselves were not consistent, especially in the use of military terminology. Other translations were incomplete. These monographs are important in that they are one of the few sources of Japanese planning and operations in English, but they have to be used with caution.

Note that the numbers and titles tended to vary: some early histories of the Philippines in World War I cite these as Japanese Studies on World War II with different numbering (e.g., Smith, "Triumph in the Philippines"); some of the manuscripts show the different numbers. Numbers and titles were standardized in the early 1960s.

All the monographs are written in a detached, impersonal manner, emphasizing plans and units. This makes them difficult for non-specialists to comprehend and use. Still, these monographs are a main source of information from the Japanese side.

On title page: “Record of 35th Army Operation.” Dated October 1946, Compiled from data reported by ex-Maj Masataka Iwano of Imperial General Headquarters; to which were added the recollections of ex-35th Army Assistant Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Yoshiharu Tomochika. Edited by ex-Col. Ryoichiro Aoshima, with the assistance of Rigai Watanabe of the 35th Army staff, and former division staff officers. The manuscript notes that because of the variety of sources, “incorrect dates and numerical figures of troops and over-lapping of incidents must be tolerated.” Is in outline form, with orders, figures and unit organization mixed into the general narrative. Maps and charts.

<text>Volume XIII of the series History of United States Naval Operations in World War II [Note: two other volumes have Philippine material: Vol. III, "Rising Sun in the Pacific," which covers the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Philippines, including Bataan and Corregidor; and Vol. XII which is on the Battle of Leyte Gulf and operations related to the Leyte landings].

Commissioned by the US Navy, this volume (one of 15) is not an official history in the sense that the writer, a professional and noted historian even before World War II, was not subject to any checking or editing by naval officials, as the US Army histories were. Morison was in many of the key battles to observe, first hand, the action he would be writing about.

This volume covers US Navy operations in the Philippines after the Battle of Leyte (which is covered in Vol. XII): mainly the landings on Mindoro, Lingayen Gulf, Corregidor, Mindanao and the Visayas islands. The volume covers both the operations of the 3rd Fleet under Adm. William F. Halsey (the fast carrier striking force), which provided aerial cover and destroyed Japanese positions on the ground, and the 7th Fleet under Adm. Thomas C. Kincaid, which carried out the actual landing operations. Morison discusses the Kamikaze threat (first experienced at Leyte) particularly in Mindoro and Lingayen, the December 1944 typhoon (which cost Halsey several destroyers and men lost). The Battle of Manila is covered briefly.

The work is readable, with many personal insights regarding the admirals. There is however little mention of US Navy assistance to Filipino guerrillas; the focus is on the larger fleet operations and army-navy cooperation.</text>

Called to active duty in 1941, he was sent to the Philippines and was assigned to the 88th Field Artillery Regiment (Philippine Scouts). He saw service in Bataan, marched the Death March and endured months in prison camp, before he escaped from a prison ship off Mindanao in September 1944. Aided by guerrillas, he was eventually evacuated to Australia by submarine (the Narwhal). While a prisoner of war, he made use of his training as a priest by aiding his fellow prisoners and organizing prayers and religious services. After the war, Morrett went to China as a full-fledged missionary, remaining there until just before the Communist take over in 1949.</text>
