<text>Personal observations and vignettes by a respected Japanese resident of Manila. Mr. Osawa arrived in the Philippines in 1925, and published his autobiography ("A Japanese in the Philippines") in 1981.

This collection of memories and anecdotes supplements his autobiography, focusing on individuals and experiences relating to the Japanese community in the Philippines before, during and after the war. He considers the period before the war as the high point, the war period as a tragedy, and the post-war period a renaissance for the Japanese community.

Part 2 of this book deals with his wartime experiences, as interpreter for the incoming Japanese forces, and head of the Liquid Fuel Distribution Union. He cites his friends and also Japanese who damaged the reputation of Japan. He also deals with postwar imprisonment in Muntinlupa, and the fate of Japanese war criminals. </text>

The author is an American lawyer who was in the Philippines during the Vietnam War; he writes for a general audience and thus explains the Philippines, its people and culture in simple terms; at times the book reads like a tourist guide.

Some of his characters are real (such as Chick Parsons), but others seem fictional. The author does not explain whether this is history or historical fiction; he cites no sources and has no acknowledgement so it is difficult to tell.

The book has a number of historical errors, if it is history: on p. 59, for example, he has one of his characters growing up in Forbes Park (Forbes Park was established after World War II). </text>

<text>The content of this book (not to be confused with the official US Army history by Robert Ross Smith) was written and compiled in 1946 by the Combat History Division, G-1 Section, United States Army Forces Western Pacific based in Manila, but not formally published (except for the section on Corregidor).

It covers the entire war and Japanese occupation of the Philippines in four sections: Bataan: Into Darkness; Corregidor: Of Eternal Memory; Enemy Occupation: Guerrillas; and The Return: Total Victory. Using primary official and personal materials, which the Combat History Division compiled, the four volumes were written in popular style by members of the history division, - namely Lt. Col. Le Roy V. Greene and Capt. Justus C. Bateman - who were professional journalists before the war.

This work provides a quick capsule history of the war and guerrilla resistance movement as it was known at that time by the Americans. The editor added his own comments in a supplement, entitled “A Reassessment of the History of the Second World War in Bataan from the Viewpoint of a Filipino.”

This volume is the third in Col. Ancheta’s series, “Historic Documents of World War II in the Philippines.”</text>

<text>This book is a collection of interview excerpts (and occasional quotes from published personal accounts) relating to personal experiences during World War II in the Philippines.

Almost all of the interviewees (“narrators” is the term used in the book) were historical figures, virtually all of who are now gone. Among them are Raul Manglapus, Esther Bellarmino, Marcos “Marking” Agustin, Joaquin Roces, Fr. James B. Reuter, Earl Hornbostel and others. Almost all were connected with the underground resistance movement in one way or the other, and speak of Filipino courage during the dark years of occupation.

The interview excerpts are arranged chronologically, by topic (pre-war life; start of the war; Manila Open City; Bataan; POW camp; guerrilla resistance; Japanese tortures; the Muntinglupa jail breaks, liberation). Extremely valuable for rare first-person accounts from the Filipino perspective.</text>

<text>This volume is a compilation of four oral histories conducted as part of the California State University, Fullerton Oral History Program.

Onorato is an American historian specializing in the Philippines during the American colonial period, and these interviews were meant to document the experiences of some key individuals; these were published as separate volumes in 1977-1987, right after the interviews were conducted.

The first of the four is "Henry Sioux Johnson: Stranger in a Strange Land." Johnson is a Chinese American fleeing from the Japanese in Shanghai only to be caught in Manila by the war. As an American citizen, he was interned in Santo Tomas and Los Baños. He discusses his internment in this interview. A study he conducted on the former internees is appended.

The second interview is "James J. Halsema: The Internment Camp at Baguio," where Halsema narrates his experiences in Baguio at the start of the war, and internment in Camp Holmes (now Camp Dangwa), and later Bilibid. Three articles written by Halsema (and published in the "Bulletin of the American Historical Collection") on the camp in Baguio and a list of internees are appended. (Halsema was the son of the prewar mayor of Baguio, and was a correspondent for the Manila Daily Bulletin at the start of the war).

The third interview is of a husband and wife, "Maurice and Virginia Chapman: Experiences in the Philippines." Maurice was a British bank accountant, while Virginia was an American; both met in the Philippines and were married in India. In this interview, they narrate their experiences from the start of the war (they were in Cebu), internment (in Cebu, Santo Tomas and Los Baños), and life in the Philippines before the war. Two articles written right after the war supplement the interview.

The last set of interviews is "Two Jesuits at Los Baños: Leo A. Cullum and James B. Reuter," where, in separate interviews, the two priests narrate their experiences as American Jesuits with Ateneo de Manila College caught up in the war in Manila. They describe life in occupied Manila and subsequent internment in Los Baños from 1944 to 1945. An article written by Fr. Reuter, “Singing in Captivity”, is added.</text>

Written in very simple English and Pilipino, the book is supposed to keep the memories of these heroes alive in the memories of young Filipinos. (The book tells the popularly accepted versions of the stories; the actual events are not exactly as depicted here. Bello, for example, survived the war and was not killed as is popularly believed). </text>

It also contained messages from chairman of the Philippine Executive Commission, Jorge B. Vargas, as well as Executive Orders of this institution (under Japanese supervision). A total of 13 volumes were issued, of which the last is included in the Hall collection. Being the last volume under the JMA, almost half the volume consists of speeches and documents relating to the forthcoming “independence” of the Philippines under Japan. Executive orders in this volume include those relating to postage stamps, control of firearms, government workers salaries, allotting money for the election of the Philippine National Assembly and others.

Actually, this volume was published on November 26, 1943, after the Philippine independence ceremonies in October. Copies of the Journal were captured by Filipino agents and sent to Australia by submarine; some volumes were reprinted in the US as intelligence material by the US War Department. </text>

<text>The series of Japanese Monographs were written and compiled by former Japanese army and navy officers immediately after World War II, under specific instructions from General Douglas MacArthur, who was then Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers in occupied Japan. MacArthur ordered the writing of these studies to provide the Japanese perspective of the war, given that so many important reports and documents were lost during the war, either as a result of combat operations and bombings, or else deliberate destruction at the end of the war.

Over 180 monographs were written, covering almost all aspects of the Pacific War, from the highest levels to specific regions and battles. Twenty monographs are wholly on the Philippines (army, navy, army air, navy air). Several other monographs included sections on the Philippines (such as histories of the Southern Army, Military Administration of occupied areas, railroads, and others).

Some of these monographs turned to be important sources of information for later studies, while others were hardly more than outlines of plans and organizations of units. Some covering up or omissions took place, requiring MacArthur’s headquarters to reiterate more strongly what was required in the monographs. With the abolition of the Japanese Army and Navy, the so-called First and Second Demobilization Bureaus took over administrative responsibility, for the army and the navy, respectively. The monographs were in many cases supplemented by surviving documents or reconstructed orders as remembered by surviving officers.

Due to lack of documents or the infirmity of human memory, some gaps and inaccuracies resulted. Some of the monographs were edited and published; many others were edited quickly but not finalized, and remained in manuscript form with annotations and corrections penned in. Some of the translations themselves were not consistent, especially in the use of military terminology. Other translations were incomplete. These monographs are important in that they are one of the few sources of Japanese planning and operations in English, but they have to be used with caution.

Note that the numbers and titles tended to vary: some early histories of the Philippines in World War I cite these as Japanese Studies on World War II with different numbering (e.g., Smith, "Triumph in the Philippines"); some of the manuscripts show the different numbers. Numbers and titles were standardized in the early 1960s.

All the monographs are written in a detached, impersonal manner, emphasizing plans and units. This makes them difficult for non-specialists to comprehend and use. Still, these monographs are a main source of information from the Japanese side.

Both got out of Europe in time to escape Hitler’s persecution of the Jews, but arrived in Manila in time to get caught up by the Japanese occupation. Being Austrian, they were not interned, but both struggled to survive in Manila under Japanese rule.

Trudl began to paint her impressions of the Japanese and life under them in 1943; she continued to paint until the liberation of Manila in 1945. Her paintings reflect her artistic as well as satirical skills, with background and annotations by her husband. The watercolors say more about the occupation than many words can. </text>

<text>First detailed account and rationalization of the actions of key political collaborators during the Japanese occupation.

Recto was a former associate justice of the Philippine Supreme Court and was president of the 1934-1935 Philippine Constitutional Convention. During the war, he was member of the Philippine Executive Commission, Preparatory Commission for Philippine Independence and Minister of Foreign Affairs under the Laurel government. He presents the case for the political collaborators as if in a lawyer’s brief, citing MacArthur’s alleged last instructions in December 1941, the total control by the Japanese military in the first year of Japanese rule, which the “collaborators” tried to soften, and the attempts of the Laurel government to make independence real.

Presents information available to the general public (proclamations and other documents published in the Tribune, and others), without revealing private documents. Also cites parallels in Philippine history (Filipino collaborators with the Americans in 1901) and in the world (Greece’s issue of collaboration with the Germans) Plays down his own actions and role during the occupation (even the biographical outline at the end of the book omits any mention of his positions during the occupation). It must be remembered that when this book was published, the People’s Court trials were just beginning, and Laurel and others were still in prison or released on bail.

Adds several documentary appendices to support his arguments, among them Wainwright’s surrender proclamation, MacArthur’s, Osmeña’s and Truman’s statements on collaboration, Recto’s 1944 letter to Japanese ambassador Shozo Murata, complaining of Japanese abuses, and Recto’s pre-war writings (warning of the threat of Japan).</text>
