<text>The title of this book is a misnomer: the book is neither a diary nor is it entirely about Bataan. Rather, it is a researched account of an American family separated by war: Frank Lloyd, a professional US Army officer and his wife, Evelyn and their two children.

The family arrived in the Philippines in June 1940, but Evelyn and the children were ordered back to the US in May 1941. Frank, as an army officer, was Provost Marshall of Fort McKinley, and served in the Bataan campaign, where he was made adviser to the 4th Philippine Constabulary Regiment. He decided not to surrender, and evaded the Japanese with the help of Filipinos; he then joined the guerrilla resistance movement in Luzon.

The account of the guerrillas in Central Luzon is a strong point of this book. On the other side of the Pacific, Evelyn did all she could to help in the war effort and try to obtain information about her husband. Frank survived the war, and was reunited with his beloved family.

The story is told using diaries which both Frank and Evelyn kept during the war (Frank’s diary is entitled Bataan Diary, since he spent most of the occupation years in the jungles of Bataan; this is where the title of the book comes from), and exhaustive research including interviews with surviving veterans, documents in the US National Archives and other materials. Unfortunately marred by some minor errors.</text>

<text>Extensively researched account of the camp set up by the twins Bill and Martin Fassoth, in the Zambales mountains.

The author, a Vietnam War veteran and son of one of the Bataan veterans saved by the Fassoths, narrates the start of the war in Clark Field, the Bataan campaign and the beginning of the Death March. He gives details of the Americans who escaped the march and were cared for by the Fassoth brothers and Bill’s Filipina wife Catalina.

The Fassoths were sugar planters in Luzon, and used their own money and resources to shelter these American escapees. The Japanese raided the camp’s surroundings several times, narrowly missing the camp itself. The Japanese were finally able to force the Fassoths to give up, and the escapees were placed in prison camps, where many died. Decker painstakingly recreates the story of the camp, the guerrilla resistance movement in the camp’s environs, and the fates of the key actors.

Appendices provide lists of those aided by the Fassoths, and their fates. The Fassoths themselves were awarded the Medal of Freedom by the US government after the war.</text>

Oatman describes his experiences as an infantryman in Bataan, the surrender, Death March, and his escape. He was able to evade the Japanese and stayed at Fassoth’s Camp in the Zambales mountains, before being forced to surrender. He narrates his life as prisoner of war, criticizing officers who made the best out of rank. He was transported to Japan on a prison ship, and survived forced labor in Japan.</text>

<text>Personal account of a West Point graduate and professional US Army officer sent to the Philippines in 1940.

Assigned as senior US instructor to the mobilizing 11th Infantry Regiment, Volckmann describes the problems the regiment faced in training; the sudden onslaught of war and his abruptly becoming regimental commander; the Japanese invasion, withdrawal to Bataan and holding the lines for three months. When Bataan surrendered, Volckmann chose not to follow the orders and escaped, eventually making his way to northern Luzon where he was able to unify guerrilla units into the USAFIP NL (US Army Forces in Northern Luzon), one the most successful guerrilla organizations in the Philippines.

Discusses the successes and failures of fighting a guerrilla war, becoming recognized by MacArthur and fighting as more organized forces in the campaigns to free northern Luzon from the Japanese.

Published at the height of the Cold War, Volckmann also includes a chapter on the role of guerrilla resistance in wars of the future. </text>
