Lim was the first Filipino to graduate from the US Military Academy at West Point, and rose to become deputy chief of staff of the Philippine Army during the Commonwealth years just before World War II. When USAFFE was mobilized, Lim became the commander of the 41st Division, perhaps the army’s best unit. He led his division in Bataan, but had to surrender when ordered. He survived the death march, was released in mid-1942, but organized a resistance unit. Eventually he was caught by the Japanese and executed. This book published his letters to his sons (then studying in the US), detailing his views on Philippine defense and the Philippine Army, errors being made by MacArthur and other issues prior to the war. The last letter was written to his wife while Lim was in Bataan. An informative introduction by Edilberto C. de Jesus provides a good summary biography of the general; an appendix is the officers’ roster of the 41st Division. Other appendices are letters attesting to Lim’s heroism in Bataan, his loss during the war, the Lim family tree and others. Description An account of the resource Frank Cary was an American missionary to Japan, born of missionaries serving in Japan since the 1880s. He and his wife were stationed in Hokkaido when the threat of war brought them to Davao, to continue the mission (his wife and children were in the US by then). He was interned in Davao, and later moved to Santo Tomas Internment Camp in Manila. These letters, written to his wife, children and friends in the US, although there was no way to mail them. They chronicle Cary’s experiences, observations and anxieties. Since Frank could speak and read Japanese, he was used as an interpreter occasionally. These letters were written to his family in the States and describe life in Fort McKinley and Nichols airfield (he was a flight surgeon) before the war. There are no writings during the actual wartime period, but he resumed his writing in October 1942 in a series of letters describing prisoner-of-war life. These letters were not mailed, but serve as a record of how he survived in Camp O’Donnell, Cabanatuan and other prison camps under the Japanese.
